Since the 1970’s, numbers of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) have increased significantly in many regions of North America. A variety of problems, both real and perceived, have been associated with these increases, including impacts to aquaculture, sport and commercial fisheries, natural habitats, and other avian species. Concern is greatest over impacts to sport and commercial fish populations, and to aquaculture. In 2000, the Waterbird Group at the University of Minnesota began to explore many aspects of cormorant ecology and biopolitics. This website provides examples and summaries of our recent activities.
