Colonial waterbirds are a significant biological resource in the Great Lakes. They (1) indicate ecosystem health and change, (2) link nutrient exchange between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, (3) serve as key aesthetic symbols of the Great Lakes environment and (4) are important components of public recreation and education. Francie Cuthbert has studied colonial waterbirds in the Great Lakes for about 25 years. This website highlights recent work by Dr. Cuthbert, her research associates and graduate students. Research was conducted out of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI.
